How to Become a Locksmith

Training to become a locksmith, or thinking about it? Here is some information you may want to know.

What A Locksmith Does

A locksmith is a person who is responsible for locks and keys. Usually general information in locksmithing enables you to work on homes, businesses, or cars, but most in today’s world specialize in all three. Locksmiths are versed in all kinds of locks and keys and know how to repair locks, install locks, replace keys, pick locks, repair keys, and the like. As a locksmith, you can work on your own or through a company. We at Locksmith Sacramento recommend you work with us, as we will be able to provide you with the clientele you need to ensure an income. We’ll also require certification and licensure, and we’ll help you get it, which means that your clients will know they can count on you.

Requirements for Being a Locksmith

The Associated Locksmiths of America (ALOA) has a few requirements for becoming a locksmith. Requirements for the job are, of course, training and education. In some states it is required that you obtain a locksmith license, and though a degree is not necessary, completion of a training or apprenticeship program is. You’ll need to gain experience, anywhere from 3 months to upwards of 4 years. And while you can work on your own with either a state license or professional certification, it’s usually easier to work through a locksmith company to guarantee the licensure and equipment as well as the work. You’ll have to develop critical locksmithing skills, including hand-eye coordination, dexterity, extensive knowledge and understanding of locks, the ability to quickly determine where a problem is, knowledge of how to use the tools, spatial perception, and mathematical and mechanical ability. All of these will help you with your job.

The Training Process

First, you train. Find an apprenticeship or a program that teaches locksmithing (through local schools or state organizations) and learn all there is to know about repairing and replacing locks, keys, picking locks, and more. The more specialized your training (especially if you have multiple specializations), the more marketable you will be. Next, gain experience. You can work directly with Locksmith Sacramento to gain the experience necessary to obtain your private license. Once you’ve gotten the training and experience, you can take exams to receive your license and professional certification such as Registered Locksmith (RL), Certified Registered Locksmith (CRL), Certified Professional Locksmith (CPL), and Certified Master Locksmith (CML). Lastly, continue your education. This will keep you up to date on new lock mechanisms that are invented and will help you to retain your certification or gain a higher level of certification.
